Broccoli is a member of the cruciferous vegetable family, which also includes cabbage, cauliflower and cress among other things. All cruciferous vegetables come highly recommended for their nutritional value, but none more so than broccoli. You could do worse than including more of this green vegetable in your diet, and this article will show you why.

To get an idea of broccoli’s nutritional content, have a look at this list: Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Vitamin K, Folic Acid, Manganese, Dietary fiber, Potassium, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B5, Magnesium, Calcium, Choline, Vitamin B1, Iron and Selenium.

This list of 16 different nutrients doesn’t even cover everything that broccoli contains! Pound for pound, broccoli has one of the highest proportions of nutrients of any vegetable. But in order to understand just what makes broccoli good for us, it’s important to know what some of these nutrients do. Here is some information about the nutrients broccoli is most rich in.

Folic Acid: Folic acid is particularly important for pregnant women, and is known to reduce the rate of birth defects. It’s also important for psychological health and is thought to help in the prevention of strokes.

To get the most out of your broccoli, it’s best not to overcook it as this will kill much of its nutritional value. Avoiding this is easy: simply make sure that your broccoli is still crunchy when you serve it. If you usually boil your broccoli, do it for only 2 or 3 minutes. Alternatively, you can lightly steam or fry your broccoli, or eat it raw with a dip like hummus.

However you choose to cook your broccoli, eating plenty of it is an excellent way to improve your diet and provide your body with the nutrition that it needs.

The power of dumbbells.  They do make a difference.  I believe that using dumbbells has helped to reduce arm flab and back rolls drastically.


Free Weights VS Machine exercise

Range of Motion

Something to keep in mind and never forget is that when you exercise, you are training for life. You can spend an hour a day in the gym, that will still leave another 23 hours or so for your muscles to function without using any fancy equipment. When you do any type of exercise, the movement of your body during the exercise is known as the range of motion. The more difficult the range of motion is, the more effective the exercise will be.  The is because your body has to work twice as hard to perform the movement.



The Classic Dumbbell Bicep Curl

The classic dumbbell bicep curl is performed by standing up straight with your palms facing forward, and a pair of dumbbells held down by your sides. You’ll contract your biceps to bring the dumbbells up to your shoulder height, then repeat the exercise as many times as you wish.  Using that same movement for exercise on a bicep curl machine, you would sit down, brace your upper arms on a pad, grasp 2 handles that are in front of you, then perform the same movement as above to move the handles in an upward motion.



Muscle Contractions

Look at the muscle contractions of this exercise, you are contracting your biceps when you are using the curl machine, that is pretty much all you are doing. When you use the machine,  you are sitting down, which limits how much your shoulders give.  The muscles used in this machine exercise limited to the biceps, forearms and fingers.  When using machine weights, you will be limited by what type of exercise you can perform. You must follow a strict procedure, which is pretty much the same with free weights. Unlike free weights, machine weights offer a certain degree of resistance.

The best thing about free weights is the ability to select the weight you want to use. Instead of dragging it over to your exercise area, you can simply select it on the machine. When you are tired during a workout, this could be a blessing.

Many argue that free weights are the best for your body; however, many feel that the machine weights are best. There are pros and cons with machines and with free weight.  Free weights have been around longer so they have been proven time after time to achieve dramatic results.

Many years ago I ran 7 miles per day.  I did this for about 4 years until I conceived my daughter.  As I look back at the benefits of running, I realize how wonderful running makes one feel overall.

Exercise, in general, can have many emotional benefits, but running has the most powerful impact on your mental state. If you are a runner, you know the feeling – before your run you may have felt tired or stressed about certain life events, then after your run you feel fantastic!

Our minds are very powerful. Our minds control our thoughts and actions, which can often influence our physical health. Of course running is a great exercise for losing weight and building your cardiovascular health, but it also has benefits to the inner essence of our being. Here’s how:

1) Decreases Stress

Stress is a mental state of mind. No matter how you may hate to admit it or believe it, you do cause your own stress. When you allow the situations in life to affect you internally, you have given power to that particular situation by feeling stress.

Running allows you to focus more on your breathing and the scenery around you. The deep breathing soothes the feelings of fear and/or anxiety that are associated with stress. Running is like a release button to the stress that accumulates in your body.

2) Increases Self-Esteem

When you are running on a regular basis, your self-esteem slowly starts to increase. You start to feel good about yourself, whether it is the weight loss, weight maintenance, or the health benefits that you receive.

As you have the energy and endurance to run, it gives you a sense of needing to take care of your body, so you are less likely to eat foods that are not good for you, or partake in any unhealthy behavior. You see the benefits that running gives you, and you have a sense of pride and respect for your body.

3) Increases Feeling of Freedom

Running is a great way to feel free – free from all the challenges and obstacles that life sometimes delivers. When you are running, there is a sense of freedom. You can go where you want at the speed you want, and no one and no thoughts can hinder this freedom.

You automatically feel a sense of release from the demanding boss, nagging children, or pushy creditors. Even if for only a moment, you are free and in your own place of silence and calmness that is soothing to both your body and mind. Sometimes it takes physical activity to really quiet our minds – something that is not easy to achieve in modern society.

4) Decreases Depression

When you are running, your brain automatically releases beta endorphins. Beta endorphins are neurotransmitters in the brain that are affected during depression. In depression, the neurotransmitters are not firing properly, and a feeling of overall wellness is decreased.

This is the reason why many feel a “runners’ high” after a run. It is a complete feeling of peacefulness and happiness, as if all the problems of the day have actually disappeared.
